 The Unity of Life


The shining sun

Its ray of light

And the warmth on my face

Are one


The mountain’s melt water

The course of the river

Its mouth and the ocean 

Are one


The mother’s love

The milk of her breast

And her thriving son

Are one


The father a teacher 

A teacher of love

For he and his sons

Are one


The teacher’s wise words

The student’s open ear

And the burgeoning mind

Are one


The woodworker’s vision

His benchmark precision

And the beauty of the grain

Are one


The teacher of Spirit

And those invited to see it

By the example of her life

Are one


Their paths divergent

Customs and colors different

Yet all Earth’s peoples

Are one




The eye of the Bowman

The arc of the arrow

And the mark of life 

Are one

Muslims’ call to prayer, five times a day. A blues man pouring out his wounded heart. A song writer strumming and singing his truth. School kids piping-up their innocent songs. A family caroling outside Grandma’s door. A lover serenading the love of his life. A mother’s lullaby to her sleepy baby. Baptists, Catholics, Buddhists, Muslims, Blues Men, Song Writers, School Kids, Carolers, Lovers, Moms. Which ones does God hear? If you hear them, doesn’t God?

  Idioms, Literally If you think these are corny, think again. Eating them, and the paper they’re on, even with butter and salt, just wouldn’t be good. You say you ran into a friend today. Isn’t it safer just to walk up to him? When you burst out laughing, did you have to go to the emergency room? You must look funny down on your hands and knees beating around a bush. When you make a change across the board, better see it before you saw it. When someone says “age before beauty,” what does an ageing beauty do? There’s a lot of name-calling on April 1st. Everyone calls everyone else a fool. I’ve heard a baby crier, a baby sigher, and a baby giggler, but I’ve never heard a baby boomer. Why would a man bark up a tree, even if it’s the right one?
